When Life Gives You Watermelons...

...make watermelon ice cream.

Ok, so the blog pause didn't last that long.

In honor of July 4th, it seemed to be a good idea to celebrate with watermelon, if not fireworks. Decided to try something new.

Step 1: remove watermelon "meat" from shell. De-seed.
Step 2) simmer cream and eggs on stove for 4 minutes, pour over watermelon. Let cool.
Step 3) blend watermelon and custard mixture with hand blender
Step 4) chop chocolate and put in fridge so it doesn't melt
Step 5) freeze ice cream in ice cream machine of choice (mine is not doing that well these days! :-( )
Step 6) Put chocolate chips into icecream before it fully freezes and then spoon it into hollowed out watermelon shell.
Step 7) Eat and Enjoy.

:-) Unfortunately, looks cooler than it is. Major ice crystals because of the ice cream maker that was on the fritz. So while it looks creamy and frothy in the photo, it was hard as a rock the next morning. I am not sure what to do with it. It's tasty enough if you are patient enough to scrape away some watermelon/chocolate granita...but ...not quite what I envisioned. Gotta look into alternative ice cream machines or something.

you are unafraid when it comes to concocting. my first thought was watermelon + creamy parts = no. then add chocolate which normally improves all = no. but normally you succeed and i salivate. blueberries are in right now too, see what you can do with them. they're blue, they fit the july 4 color pallet. :) belated happy 4th.

What's to be afraid of? In the worst case, I have to throw something away. This doesn't happen that often, but it does in fact happen. ;-) As for the watermelon plus cream plus chocolate - trust me, it was good, although coulda been been better. Just like watermelon granita with flecks of dark chocolate...I had something like this many years ago, so I was sort of trying to re-create it. But you know...the plain old watermelon, chilled and cut into cubes...was probably the best. As for blueberries...well, I like blueberry pancakes and blueberry muffins. Can't go wrong with either of those. I have a recipe with duck breast and blueberries (savory - with thyme), but to be honest, I'm not dying to try it.
